GRADES 11-12: Why the IB is amazing!
The IBDP is a two-year preparation for college. Studying the IB Diploma helps you develop real skills: critical thinking, time management, research skills, and confident English – exactly what top universities and future employers want.
At Baishan School, the IBDP is taught in English, but every student must also study a first language which for Chinese students will most likely be Chinese Literature. Studying Chinese as a first language strengthens student academic performance, enhances second language learning, and helps students retain their cultural identity and build social skills, confidence, and critical thinking skills.
Students must study English but at a level where they can excel. Second language English emphasises effective communication and is supported by all the other learning that takes place in English Together with a choice of Humanities, Experimental Science subjects, Mathematics, and Arts subjects, IBDP students study a range of six subjects concurrently over the two years of the Diploma.
Supporting the subject disciplines is the IBDP core of Theory of Knowledge (a critical thinking course), CAS (an experiential learning course that requires students to engage regularly in creativity, activity, and service learning), and the Extended Essay (a university level essay in a subject discipline of their choice).
During the IBDP, students have school-based assessments such as orals and essays for languages, short essays for Humanities, lab work for sciences, and maths projects. The grades from school-based assessments combined with external exams after the end of two years create the final IBDP scores.
GRADE 10: Getting Ready for the IB Diploma!
Our Pre-Diploma Programme (Pre-DP) is designed to strengthen the knowledge, concepts, skills, and attitudes learned in the IMYC by engaging students with the IB and BHS Mission Statements, working towards Approaches to Learning (ATL) mastery, involving students with challenging and interesting projects to understand the IB Diploma core, and foster the development of their international-mindedness and life-long love of learning. All the subjects studied in the pre-DP directly relate to subjects in the IB Diploma and serve to ensure that there is a strong foundation for study at IB Diploma level.
In addition to subject disciplines, our pre-DP will have study blocks where students will be given extra tuition to ensure that they have mastered subject material in each class as well as support in doing homework. SPARK is our programme designed to engage students in authentic learning experiences. SPARK stands for Service, Physical Activity, Research & Reflection, Kindness and Leadership.
SPARK classes add variety and excitement to the programme challenging students in multiple different ways and pushing them into trying new challenges to broaden their experiences and develop new skills.
